Foreclosures and bank owned homes are one in the same.  Another term used is REO.  These homes have been lost by their owners and reverted back to the bank.  Typically the bank will try and sell these houses at auction on the court house steps.  If they don't gat a satisfactory offer they will have a real estate agent list the property.

These homes are usually offered "As Is" meaning no repairs will be made by the bank.  It is very important to get a home inspection so you know what you are getting yourself into. 

Bank owned homes are often significantly discounted sometimes 20%-30% off current market value depending on the area.  Great deals can be had if you have a Realtor who stays on top of the market.  The good ones usually go fast and you may be competing with other buyers for the house.
